sweet feelings
Richarlison x reader
Tumblr media
Hi, hello. Soooo I’ve written something and wanted to share. Maybe it will come to your liking. I write stuff from time to time but mostly in my mother language and english is not my first language so I'm very sorry for any misspelling and mistakes in my grammar :( I am a huge football fan and sometimes I just get inspired by those talented boys.
This one is for one of my favourite Brasilians. Hope it'll reach some audience. Let me know what you think and if you'd like a Part 2 ;)
warning: it's a bit smuttish, aaaaand i've never wrote a smut so I'm sorry for poor writing as well. friends to lovers trope bcuz i'm kinda a sucker for that :|
After the ceremony of The Best FIFA Football Awards, you and Richarlison both came back to your hotel around 2 am. You were feeling slightly tipsy, due to the few sweet and sour drinks you’ve had at the gala, so you kept smiling at your friend trying to convince him to carry you to your shared room.
„Now you’re just being whiny" he commented after letting you first into the lift.
Your legs were killing you after wearing high heels all night. You’d take them off right this moment if it weren’t for the lack of energy to actually bend down.
You sighed.
 „Are you dissapointed?”
„No, why would I be?” Richy answered looking in your direction.
„You were very excited about this ceremony. But it was nice of you to congratulate the winner"
You sent him a warm smile.
„It was a fun time anyway. Paris is pretty” he shrugged.
After entering the room you sat on the sofa right away, feeling tired. It was so calm, warm and quiet inside, the only sounds were coming from the outside, an urban tumult caused by passing cars and honks or police sirens. But it was just a distant noise that actually made you feel a bit more relaxed. Your dress started to feel too tight.
Richarlison sat on a little table that was right infront of you and took your left foot to place it on his knee. You smiled softly seeing him unfasten the clasp at your high heel sandals. Your thigh visibly bare due to the slit dress you were wearing.
„Are you upset that I didn’t join you on the carpet?” you asked before he took off your shoe completely and placed it gently next to the sofa.
You two weren’t a couple. You’ve known each other for almost 3 years now and have been spending a lot of time together lately. The moment you met something just clicked between you two and after some time you started to run into each other more often. In the second half of 2019 you were assigned to work in London and Liverpool, and since your work was associated with sports environment, football in general, you kept seeing him more during football matches or other sport events. At the time you met, Richarlison was in a relationship and you were too busy for any love interests. It was very casual in the begging until it wasn’t. For you at least. You were quite a distant person, always gatekeeping your emotions from showing too easily, your friends always said that you often come off as cold or blase even. It’s quite funny because you feel like you were the most sensitive and fragile person that could ever walk this earth and anyone could notice this if they’ve ever put more effort into it. There were times when you felt like Richarlison could actually read into you efforlessly and this relationship between you two have started to grow into something more tender. But it wasn’t love – rather lukewarm friendship.
You didn’t actually discuss the matter. You were convinced that showing up at the ceremony, with Richarlison holding you on his arm, will cause a fuss and gossips about you two being together will start to spread. Which wasn’t true. You weren’t a couple. Anyway you just couldn’t shake off the feeling that something have truly upset him tonight.
„No I am not, you had things to do. Besides… we agreed on that" he just shrugged being sure that you know what he was referring to.
After taking both of your shoes off he stood up and took his jacket off, hanging it over the sofa backrest and sat next to you.
He looked very handsome in the white shirt and black tie, you don’t get to see him dressed like that often. You enjoyed this look on him, however you didn’t get to tell him this openly, despite the fact that he’s been complimenting you at any chance he’s got. That was one of the main differences between you two, you generally were too nervous about this type of disclosure, when he in fact was immensely open and have never found it difficult to speak out whatever he truly wanted to say. You’ve always thought of him as of free spirit.
You rested your arm on the sofa to face him comfortably.
„Then what is it?” you asked.
He sat the same way like you and smiled gently.
„Nothing much” Richy wiped his face with his palm „I just feel helpless lately. Had my moment at the world cup and that’s it”
„You’re being too harsh on yourself”
„But it’s true. I feel like i’m not giving enough” he shook his head avoiding eye contact.
„It’ll pass” you whispered appreciating his vulnerability „Give yourself some time. You still have that great potencial in you”.
He hummed sending you a warm smile and started to untie the tie he was wearing.
„You look beatiful today” he added shortly, looking straight into your eyes.
Another moment when you felt that he could actually dig in right into your heart and soul. You let out a shaky breath. He truly said it for like the third time tonight.
„Let me” you just said leaning in to untie his tie for him.
The moment you got closer you felt the scent of his cologne, it was your favourite. After you told him that you like the perfume, he started to use it frequently because, as he said, he always trusts your judgement.
You were being very gentle with him. After slowly taking off his tie you undid two buttons of his shirt. You were focused on the task before you momentarily felt his heavy gaze on you. You took the risk and looked up, he had that smug grin on, almost made you roll your eyes. But mostly you started to feel really hot and dizzy. Maybe it was still the alcohol in your system or maybe he just got that effect on you. You finally had to stop lying to yourself, you were attracted to him. With any other guy it would be ten times easier. He was making you so so nervous recently, it was almost ridiculous.
You moved away from him and stood up, honestly not giving too much thought about what you were planning to do next. Something just pushed you to give in and risk a chance to show him how you truly felt about him.
„Come” you reached out both of your hands to him.
He grabbed your hands without tardiness and stood up as well, visibly towering over you. So you started to slowly walk backwards in the direction of the bed. He kept holding your hands, and you kept the eye contact. You were wondering if he knew what you truly wanted right now. Did you even know?
You stoped in your tracks and bit your lower lip before lifting your hands up to undo the rest of the shirt buttons. Richarlison said nothing, but you were almost sure that he could hear your beating heart.
„If you want me to stop right this moment, just tell me” you said sounding more confident than you really felt.
He brushed some of your locks back with his hand, exposing your chest. You felt your cheeks heating up.
„Please, continue” he murmured lowly looking intrigued.
After unbuttoning the shirt at the wrists you used your fingers to delicately slip it off his broad shoulders. It fell easily, and you were considering your next move. You began to worry that once you expose yourself to him like that, it would change a lot between you two. But you wanted him, like you have never had before, and it was starting to consume you.
You reached for the zipper of your tight black dress and noticed him looking briefly at your cleavage. His maroon iris were darkening and it caused shivers to run down your spine. You sent him a feisty grin before removing the dress straps and slowly letting the dress to fall off your body. Now you stood bare infront of him, wearing only lace thong. You heard him intake a sharp breath and stepped closer, throwing your hands over his shoulders. Your chests touched, he was warm and yet you shivered. His hand were immediatly at your hips, gripping lightly and you reveled in the feeling of his hard body pressed against your softest places.
„Can I kiss you?” you asked quietly feeling his chest rise and fall.
Now your heart was pouding mercilessly. You haven’t done much yet, however your body was almost trembling owing to how aroused you began to feel.
He didn’t answer, simply leaned in and connected your lips in a gentle and sweet kiss. He hummed lowly and his hands started to travel across your sides and back. You deepened the kiss and gasped feeling him gripping your ass cheeks. He took advantage of that, putting his tongue inside your mouth. The moment was so sweet but also exciting, it made you moan uncontrollably. You felt a clench and slowly building tingling between your legs, making you squeeze your legs together which elicited another moan from you. He then leaned back, you both were breathing faster. He looked almost etheral, with his lips slightly open, cheeks reddened and foggy eyes. Your pretty boy.
„I’ve been imagining this so many times” he breathed „You have no idea of the affect you have on me. Are you sure you want this?”
You couldn’t find words after his confession, feeling your throat tightening, so you just nodded silently and reached for the zipper of his pants. The garment fell to the ground.
„Minha linda” he said grabing your chin to make you look at him.
You smiled at the comment said in Portuguese and rolled your eyes feeling intimidated.
„Shut up” now you were back at your casual bickering.
Richarlison grinned smugly and licked his lips before bringing them to your neck. You put your hands on the back of his head, playing with his short hair, your lids closed. One of his hands traveled up your thigh and rested gently at the apex of your legs. It was delicate but abrupt and your lower body jolted forward. You heard him groan against your throat and he used his fingers to rub circles over your covered pussy.
„Oh” you whined in a high tone.
You always thought that if it ever came to this moment, you would be a little flustered and maybe unsure, because he was your best friend, and at the same time he made you feel like no other man before. But right now he was making you react to all this like an unexperienced little girl and it was so overwhelming.
„So delicate and responsive”
Of course he had to be cheeky during a moment like this. Almost made you want to slap him but you just started to grind against his palm. That’s how weak you were right now. And you were enjoying this, ready to let him do whatever he wanted with you.
You whimpered.
„Tell me what you want” he said.
„I…” your ragged breathing made you cut the sentence „want you to fuck me Richy"

Mozambique's rubies: A blessing or a curse? | DW Documentary
youtube
In Mozambique, agriculture is the mainstay of the economy and the country has a great potential for growth in the sector. Agriculture employs more than 80 percent of the labour force and provides livelihoods to the vast majority of over 23 million inhabitants. Agriculture contributed 31.5 percent of the GDP in 2009, while commerce and services accounted for 44.9 percent. By contrast, 20 percent of the total export value in 2009 originated from the agriculture sector, mostly through the export of fish (mainly shrimps and prawns), timber, copra, cashew nuts and citrus, cotton, coconuts, tea and tobacco.[14]
There are large mineral deposits, but exploration has been constrained by the civil war (1977–1992) and poor infrastructure. The World Bank has estimated that there was the potential for exports worth US$200m by 2005 – in the late 1990s they totaled US$3.6m, some 1% of total exports, and a contribution of less than 2% of GDP. Minerals currently being mined include marble, bentonite, coal, gold, bauxite, granite, titanium and gemstones. Illegal exports from artisanal production are estimated at US$50 million.[original research?]
Mozambique exported its first batch of coal in 2011 and expects to become the world's largest coal exporter. It is also spending about US$50 billion in infrastructure projects to access its coal reserves. Mozambique is reported to have the fourth largest reserves of natural gas in the world, after Russia, Iran, and Qatar.[20]
The Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral[1] (Portuguese: Catedral Metropolitana de Nossa Senhora do Rosário) also called Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, is located in Beira,[2][3] a town in the African country of Mozambique[4] and is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Beira.
Beira is where the Pungwe River meets the Indian Ocean. It is the fourth-largest city by population in Mozambique, after Maputo, Matola and Nampula. Beira had a population of 397,368 in 1997, which grew to 530,604 in 2019. A coastal city, it holds the regionally significant Port of Beira, which acts as a gateway for both the central interior portion of the country as well as the land-locked nations of Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi.
A marina (from Spanish [maˈɾina], Portuguese [mɐˈɾinɐ] and Italian [maˈriːna]: "related to the sea") is a dock or basin with moorings and supplies for yachts and small boats. A marina differs from a port in that a marina does not handle large passenger ships or cargo from freighters.
A fishmonger (historically fishwife for female practitioners) is someone who sells raw fish and seafood. Fishmongers can be wholesalers or retailers and are trained at selecting and purchasing, handling, gutting, boning, filleting, displaying, merchandising and selling their product. In some countries modern supermarkets are replacing fishmongers who operate in shops or fish markets.

Gross national product (GNP) GNP is related to another important economic measure called gross domestic product (GDP), which takes into account all output produced within a country's borders regardless of who owns the means of production. GNP starts with GDP, adds residents' investment income from overseas investments, and subtracts foreign residents' investment income earned within a country. Whilst GDP measures the total value of goods and services produced within a country's borders, GNP focuses on the income generated by its residents, regardless of their location.
Gross National Income (GNI) is the total amount of money earned by a nation's people and businesses. It is used to measure and track a nation's wealth from year to year. The number includes the nation's gross domestic product (GDP) plus the income it receives from overseas sources.

DOS SANTOS FREE-ROLE
Supporting Striker (Inverted Winger)
Central Winger (False 10)
Overlapping Run/Defensive Winger (Half-winger)
An inverted winger is a modern tactical development of the traditional winger position. Most wingers are assigned to either side of the field based on their footedness, with right-footed players on the right and left-footed players on the left.[65] This assumes that assigning a player to their natural side ensures a more powerful cross as well as greater ball protection along the touch-lines. However, when the position is inverted and a winger instead plays inside-out on the opposite flank (i.e., a right-footed player as a left inverted winger), they effectively become supporting strikers and primarily assume a role in the attack.[66]
The "false 10" or "central winger"[55] is a type of midfielder, which differs from the trequartista. Much like the "false 9", their specificity lies in the fact that, although they seemingly play as an attacking midfielder on paper, unlike a traditional playmaker who stays behind the striker in the centre of the pitch, the false 10's goal is to move out of position and drift wide when in possession of the ball to help both the wingers and fullbacks to overload the flanks. This means two problems for the opposing midfielders: either they let the false 10 drift wide, and their presence, along with both the winger and the fullback, creates a three-on-two player advantage out wide; or they follow the false 10, but leave space in the centre of the pitch for wingers or onrushing midfielders to exploit. False 10s are usually traditional wingers who are told to play in the centre of the pitch, and their natural way of playing makes them drift wide and look to provide deliveries into the box for teammates.
In Italian football, the term mezzala (literally "half-winger" in Italian) is used to describe the position of the one or two central midfielders who play on either side of a holding midfielder and/or playmaker. The term was initially applied to the role of an inside forward in the WM and Metodo formations in Italian, but later described a specific type of central midfielder. The mezzala is often a quick and hard-working attack-minded midfielder, with good skills and noted offensive capabilities, as well as a tendency to make overlapping attacking runs, but also a player who participates in the defensive aspect of the game, and who can give width to a team by drifting out wide; as such, the term can be applied to several different roles.
On occasion, the false-10 can also function in a different manner alongside a false-9, usually in a 4–6–0 formation. Midfield collective of False 9, False 10, Box to Box, Holding, Half Winger, Attacking, Defensive.
Thiago Motta’s ‘Super Offensive’ 2-7-2 Formation Explained: Instead of the traditional way of looking at a tactical set-up horizontally, the Brazil-born manager instead split the field into three vertical lanes. This means he effectively has seven players in the central channel with two players out wide on each flank.
We are not stretching the defensive line itsself, but the space between the defensive line and the goalkeeper

The language emerged from contact between French settlers and enslaved Africans during the Atlantic slave trade in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) in the 17th and 18th centuries. Although its vocabulary largely derives from 18th-century French, its grammar is that of a West African Volta-Congo language branch, particularly the Fongbe and Igbo languages.

Go Go Music Influenced, Eurphoric Trance Chord Progression Melody, Progressive House and Drum n' Bass Percussion-808 Call and Response Staccato Polyrhythm or Layered Kick and Punch 808.
In his 1972 study of French lute music, scholar Wallace Rave compiled a list of features he believed to be characteristic of style brisé. Rave's list included the following: the avoidance of textural pattern and regularity in part writing; arpeggiated chord textures with irregular distribution of individual notes of the chord; ambiguous melodic lines; rhythmic displacement of notes within a melodic line; octave changes within melodic line; irregular phrase lengths.
Have the Snare and Kick say, "Hi, How are you?" And the 808 say, "I am good thanks for asking.”
Use progressive House to push the Drums Conversation to either Fast and Punchy for Happy or Slow and Deep for Sad.
In technical terms, "go-go's essential beat is characterized by a five through four syncopated rhythm that is underscored prominently by the bass drum and snare drum, and the hi-hat... [and] is ornamented by the other percussion instruments, especially by the conga drums, rototoms, and hand-held cowbells."[5]
Polyrhythm: In music, a cross-beat or cross-rhythm is a specific form of polyrhythm. The term cross rhythm was introduced in 1934 by the musicologist Arthur Morris Jones (1889–1980). It refers to a situation where the rhythmic conflict found in polyrhythms is the basis of an entire musical piece.[1]
Four-on-the-floor (or four-to-the-floor) is a rhythm used primarily in dance genres such as disco and electronic dance music. It is a steady, uniformly accented beat in 4. 4 time in which the bass drum is hit on every beat (1, 2, 3, 4).[1] This was popularized in the disco music of the 1970s[2] and the term four-on-the-floor was widely used in that era, since the beat was played with the pedal-operated, drum-kit bass drum.[3][4] (Punch 808-Kick)
Polyrhythm 4 on the Floor examples 2:4 or 5:4
Hard trance is often characterized by strong, hard (or even downpitch) kicks, fully resonant basses and an increased amount of reverberation applied to the main beat. Melodies vary from 140 to 180 BPMs and it can feature plain instrumental sound in early compositions, with the latter ones tending to implement side-chaining techniques of progressive on digital synthesizers.

Commercialism is the application of both manufacturing and consumption towards personal usage, or the practices, methods, aims, and distribution of products in a free market geared toward generating a profit.
Commercial art is art created for advertising or marketing purposes. Commercial artists are hired by clients to create images and logos that sell products. Unlike works of fine art that convey an artist's personal expression, commercial art must address the client's goals.
The word 'Commercial' is defined as follows: Concerned with or engaged in commerce. Commerce is the exchange of goods or services among two or more parties.
Craftsmen are committed to the medium, not to self-expression. Artists are committed to their self-expression, not the medium.
A medium of exchange is an intermediary instrument and system used to facilitate the purchase and sale of goods and services between parties.

IMPERIALISM, THE HIGHEST STAGE OF CAPITALISM
Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism,[1] originally published as Imperialism, the Newest Stage of Capitalism,[2][3] is a book written by Vladimir Lenin in 1916 and published in 1917. It describes the formation of oligopoly, by the interlacing of bank and industrial capital, in order to create a financial oligarchy, and explains the function of financial capital in generating profits from the exploitation colonialism inherent to imperialism, as the final stage of capitalism. The essay synthesises Lenin's developments of Karl Marx's theories of political economy in Das Kapital (1867).[4]

A clay-court specialist is a tennis player who excels on clay courts, more than on any other surface.
Due in part to advances in racquet technology, current clay-court specialists are known for employing long, winding groundstrokes that generate heavy topspin; such strokes are less effective on faster surfaces on which the balls do not bounce as high. Clay-court specialists tend to slide more effectively on clay than other players. Many of them are also very adept at hitting the drop shot, which can be effective because rallies on clay courts often leave players pushed far beyond the baseline. Additionally, the slow, long rallies require a great degree of mental focus and physical stamina.
CASAPIANOS MARTYROLOGY ORDER (CATHOLIC COUNTER-REFORMATION)
The Casa Pia is a Portuguese institution founded by Maria I, known as A Pia ("Mary the Pious"), and organized by Police Intendant Pina Manique in 1780, following the social disarray of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. For almost three centuries, thousands of young boys and girls were raised by Casa Pia, including many public personalities, called casapianos. Casa Pia is Portugal's largest educational institution dedicated to helping youngsters in risk of social exclusion or without parental support. The organisation is composed of ten schools and enrolls approximately 4700 students. In addition to standard schooling, the organisation also provides boarding for children in need. It strives to enable these youngsters to become healthy and successful members of society, by developing intellectual, manual, and physical traits, in an environment promoting spiritual, moral, and religious values. The institution is proud to have had amongst its students many outstanding Portuguese personalities, including politicians, journalists, and artists. A martyrology is a catalogue or list of martyrs and other saints and beati arranged in the calendar order of their anniversaries or feasts. Local martyrologies record exclusively the custom of a particular Church. Local lists were enriched by names borrowed from neighbouring churches.[1] Consolidation occurred, by the combination of several local martyrologies, with or without borrowings from literary sources.
The Canons Regular of St. Augustine are priests who live in community under a rule (Latin: regula and κανών, kanon, in Greek) and are generally organised into religious orders, differing from both secular canons and other forms of religious life, such as clerics regular, designated by a partly similar terminology. As religious communities, they have laybrothers as part of the community.
Clerics regular are clerics (mostly priests) who are members of a religious order under a rule of life (regular). Clerics regular differ from canons regular in that they devote themselves more to pastoral care, in place of an obligation to the praying of the Liturgy of the Hours in common, and have fewer observances in their rule of life.
Lay brother is a largely extinct term referring to religious brothers, particularly in the Catholic Church, who focused upon manual service and secular matters, and were distinguished from choir monks or friars in that they did not pray in choir, and from clerics, in that they were not in possession of (or preparing for) holy orders.[1][2][3][4][5]
In female religious institutes, the equivalent role is the lay sister. Lay brothers were originally created to allow those who were skilled in particular crafts or did not have the required education to study for holy orders to participate in and contribute to the life of a religious order.
Lay brothers were found in many religious orders. Drawn from the working classes, they were pious and hardworking people, who though unable to achieve the education needed to receive holy orders, were still drawn to religious life and were able to contribute to the order through their skills. Some were skilled in artistic handicrafts, others functioned as administrators of the orders' material assets. In particular, the lay brothers of the Cistercians were skilled in agriculture, and have been credited for the tilling of fertile farmland.[1]
Lay sisters were found in most of the orders of women, and their origin, like that of the lay brothers, is to be found in the necessity of providing the choir nuns with more time for the Office and study, as well as creating the opportunity for the illiterate to join the religious life. They, too, wore a habit different from those of the choir sisters, and their required daily prayers consisted of prayers such as the Little Office or a certain number of Paters.[1]
All canons regular are to be distinguished from secular canons who belong to a resident group of priests but who do not take public vows and are not governed in whatever elements of life they lead in common by a historical rule. One obvious place where such groups of priests are required is at a cathedral, where there were many Masses to celebrate and the Divine Office to be prayed together in community.
In modern astrology, Mars is the primary native ruler of the first house. Traditionally however, Mars ruled both the third and tenth houses, and had its joy in the fifth house. While Venus tends to the overall relationship atmosphere, Mars is the passionate impulse and action, the masculine aspect, discipline, willpower and stamina.
Mars rules over Tuesday and in Romance languages the word for Tuesday often resembles Mars (in Romanian, marți, in Spanish, martes, in French, mardi and in Italian "martedì"). The English "Tuesday" is a modernised form of "Tyr's Day", Tyr being the Germanic analogue to Mars. Dante Alighieri associated Mars with the liberal art of arithmetic. In Chinese astrology, Mars is ruled by the element fire, which is passionate, energetic and adventurous.
According to John Clements, the term martial arts itself is derived from an older Latin term meaning "arts of Mars", the Roman god of war, and was used to refer to the combat systems of Europe (European martial arts) as early as the 1550s
A religious congregation is a type of religious institute in the Catholic Church. They are legally distinguished from religious orders – the other major type of religious institute – in that members take simple vows, whereas members of religious orders take solemn vows.
In the Catholic Church, a religious order is a community of consecrated life with members that profess solemn vows. They are classed as a type of religious institute.[1]

Material religion is a framework used by scholars of religion to examine the interaction between religion and material culture. It focuses on the place of objects, images, spaces, and buildings in religious communities. The framework has been promoted by scholars such as Birgit Meyer, Sally Promey, S. Brent Plate, David Morgan, etc.
Physiocracy (French: physiocratie; from the Greek for "government of nature") is an economic theory developed by a group of 18th-century Age of Enlightenment French economists who believed that the wealth of nations derived solely from the value of "land agriculture" or "land development" and that agricultural products should be highly priced.[1] Their theories originated in France and were most popular during the second half of the 18th century. Physiocracy became one of the first well-developed theories of economics.
The Bible typically describes the Heavenly host as being made up of angels, and gives several descriptions of angels in military terms, such as their encampment (Genesis 32:1–2), command structure (Psalms 91:11–12; Matt.13:41; Rev.7:2), and participation in combat (Job 19:12; Rev.12:7). Other passages indicate other entities make up the divine army, namely stars (Judges 5:20, Isaiah 40:26).[1][full citation needed] In Christian theology, the heavenly host participate in the war in Heaven.
The doctrine or theory of immanence holds that the divine encompasses or is manifested in the material world. It is held by some philosophical and metaphysical theories of divine presence. Immanence is usually applied in monotheistic, pantheistic, pandeistic, or panentheistic faiths to suggest that the spiritual world permeates the mundane.
The Dionysian Mysteries were a ritual of ancient Greece and Rome which sometimes used intoxicants and other trance-inducing techniques (like dance and music) to remove inhibitions and social constraints, liberating the individual to return to a natural state.
Religious nationalism can be understood in a number of ways, such as nationalism as a religion itself, a position articulated by Carlton Hayes in his text Nationalism: A Religion, or as the relationship of nationalism to a particular religious belief, dogma, ideology, or affiliation. This relationship can be broken down into two aspects: the politicisation of religion and the influence of religion on politics.
Dioceses ruled by an archbishop are commonly referred to as archdioceses; most are metropolitan sees, being placed at the head of an ecclesiastical province. In the Catholic Church, some are suffragans of a metropolitan see or are directly subject to the Holy See.
The body of light, sometimes called the 'astral body'[a] or the 'subtle body,'[b] is a "quasi material"[1] aspect of the human body, being neither solely physical nor solely spiritual, posited by a number of philosophers, and elaborated on according to various esoteric, occult, and mystical teachings. Other terms used for this body include body of glory,[2] spirit-body, luciform body, augoeides ('radiant body'), astroeides ('starry or sidereal body'), and celestial body.[3] The concept derives from the philosophy of Plato: the word 'astral' means 'of the stars'; thus the astral plane consists of the Seven Heavens of the classical planets. The idea is rooted in common worldwide religious accounts of the afterlife[4] in which the soul's journey or "ascent" is described in such terms as "an ecstatic, mystical or out-of body experience, wherein the spiritual traveller leaves the physical body and travels in their body of light into 'higher' realms."[5]
The canon law of the Catholic Church (from Latin ius canonicum[1]) is "how the Church organizes and governs herself".[2] It is the system of laws and ecclesiastical legal principles made and enforced by the hierarchical authorities of the Catholic Church to regulate its external organization and government and to order and direct the activities of Catholics toward the mission of the Church.
An institute of consecrated life is an association of faithful in the Catholic Church canonically erected by competent church authorities to enable men or women who publicly profess the evangelical counsels by religious vows or other sacred bonds "through the charity to which these counsels lead to be joined to the Church and its mystery in a special way".[1] They are defined in the 1983 Code of Canon Law under canons 573–730. The Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life has ecclesial oversight of institutes of consecrated life.[2]
In Christianity, the three evangelical counsels, or counsels of perfection, are chastity (NEVER), poverty (or perfect charity), and obedience (RECKLESS ABANDONMENT).[1] As stated by Jesus in the canonical gospels,[2] they are counsels for those who desire to become "perfect" (τελειος, teleios).[3][4] The Catholic Church interprets this to mean that they are not binding upon all, and hence not necessary conditions to attain eternal life (heaven), but that they are "acts of supererogation", "over and above" the minimum stipulated in the biblical commandments.[5][6]
Catholics who have made a public profession to order their lives by the evangelical counsels, and confirmed this by public vows before their competent church authority (the act of religious commitment known as a profession), are recognised as members of the consecrated life.
The Council of Trent (Latin: Concilium Tridentinum), held between 1545 and 1563 in Trent (or Trento), now in northern Italy, was the 19th ecumenical council of the Catholic Church. Prompted by the Protestant Reformation at the time, it has been described as the embodiment of the Counter-Reformation. The Council issued key statements and clarifications of the Church's doctrine and teachings, including scripture, the biblical canon, sacred tradition, original sin, justification, salvation, the sacraments, the Mass, and the veneration of saints[4] and also issued condemnations of what it defined to be heresies committed by proponents of Protestantism. The consequences of the Council were also significant with regard to the Church's liturgy and censorship.
Initiated in part to address the challenges of the Protestant Reformations,[3] the Counter-Reformation was a comprehensive effort arising from the decrees of the Council of Trent. The effort produced apologetic and polemical documents, heresy trials, anti-corruption efforts, spiritual movements, the promotion of new religious orders, and the flourishing of new art and musical styles.
Tradwave is a Catholic artistic style using synthwave and vaporwave art to promote traditional catholicism. Tradwave usually uses traditional catholic paintings, sculptures, or photographs of saints, given with vaporwave effects, often with a bible verse or quote about catholicism. The art usually tries to convey a resurrection of catholic spirituality in the modern atheist world. Figures often depicted in Tradwave art include Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, Ven. Fulton Sheen, Cardinal Robert Sarah, and Mother Angelica.
Tradwave music often takes the form of two main styles. One of them is catholic hymns with vaporwave effects and traditional Vaporwave/Lo-Fi music. It can also have quotes from modern prolific Catholic figures, such as Ven. The other theme is Fulton Sheen and Cardinal Robert Sarah.
Heavenly Virtues: Another phrase to describe this obedience to the voice is “reckless abandon.” It simply means that we let God do what God wants to do through us. It means if He tells us to do something or say something—we do it.
Intercession or intercessory prayer is the act of praying to a deity on behalf of others, or asking a saint in heaven to pray on behalf of oneself or for others. Intercession of the Saints is a Christian doctrine that maintains that saints can intercede for others. To intercede is to go or come between two parties, to plead before one of them on behalf of the other. In ecclesiastical usage both words are taken in the sense of the intervention primarily of Christ, and secondarily of the Blessed Virgin and the angels and saints, on behalf of men.[2] The doctrine is held by the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, the Oriental Orthodox churches , and some Lutherans and Anglicans (chiefly those of Evangelical Catholic or Anglo-Catholic churchmanship, respectively).[3] The practice of asking saints for their intercession can be found in Christian writings from the 3rd century onwards.[4][5][6] Catholic doctrine supports intercessory prayer to saints. This practice is an application of the doctrine of the Communion of saints. Some of the early basis for this was the belief that martyrs passed immediately into the presence of God and could obtain graces and blessings for others, which naturally and immediately led to their direct invocation. A further reinforcement was derived from the cult of the angels which, while pre-Christian in its origin, was heartily embraced by the faithful of the sub-Apostolic age. The doctrine of intercession and invocation was set forth by the Council of Trent, which teaches that "... the saints who reign together with Christ offer up their own prayers to God for men. It is good and useful suppliantly to invoke them, and to have recourse to their prayers, aid, and help for obtaining benefits from God, through His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, Who alone is our Redeemer and Saviour".[10] Intercessory prayer to saintly persons who have not yet been beatified can also practiced by individuals, and evidence of miracles produced as a result of such prayer is very commonly produced during the formal process of beatification and canonization.
In short, the gun-toting angel was a multifaceted metaphor. “It undoubtedly also reflected the Catholic Counter-Reformation militaristic rhetoric,” wrote Donahue-Wallace, “which promoted the church as an army and heavenly beings as its soldiers.” These "Harquebusier Angels" or "Arcabuceros" are full-length depictions of winged angels, elaborately dressed, and carrying matchlock guns (harquebuses).
The related term astrolatry usually implies polytheism. In anthropological literature these systems of practice may be referred to as astral cults.
A friar is a member of one of the mendicant orders in the Roman Catholic Church. There are also friars outside of the Roman Catholic Church, such as within the Anglican Communion. The term, first used in the 12th or 13th century, distinguishes the mendicants' itinerant apostolic character, exercised broadly under the jurisdiction of a superior general, from the older monastic orders' allegiance to a single monastery formalized by their vow of stability. A friar may be in holy orders or be a non-ordained brother. The most significant orders of friars are the Dominicans, Franciscans, Augustinians, and Carmelites.[1]
Romans 8:31; Exploring Biblical Imagery is one of the most important keys to interpreting and gaining a deeper understanding of the Bible. The Bible often communicates truth to us through images and patterns.
Throughout history, armed priests or soldier priests have been recorded. Distinguished from military chaplains, who are non-combatants that provided spiritual guidance to service personnel and associated civilians, these priests took up arms and fought in conflicts as combatants. The term warrior priests or war priests is usually used for armed priests in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and of historical tribes.
Slang: In Romans 8:5-8, Paul presents a compelling contrast between living according to the flesh and living according to the Spirit. The flesh, with its disordered desires and rebellion against God, leads only to spiritual desolation. Martyr, one who voluntarily suffers death rather than deny their religion by words or deeds; such action is afforded special, institutionalized recognition in most major religions of the world. The term may also refer to anyone who sacrifices their life or something of great value for the sake of principle. A religious allusion is a brief reference to a person, event, place, or phrase from religious texts or traditions, without describing them in detail. 5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. Martyr/Romans 8 Allusion Slang.
The Roman Martyrology is an official liturgical book of the Catholic Church, with ancient origins, that lists the martyrs, confessors, virgins, and other saints, each on his or her dies natalis, or birthday into eternal life, as well as major feasts of Our Lord and Our Lady.
The Roman Martyrology is also central to the Divine Office or Liturgy of the Hours—a daily set of prayers marking the hours of each day and sanctifying it with worship. During the Office of Readings, specific entries from the martyrology are recited to inform and inspire those in prayer.
Romeu e Julieta (Casapianos Order 1996 Adaptation 18+ Romance Thriller)
While it retains the original Shakespearean dialogue, the film represents the Montagues and the Capulets as warring mafia empires (with legitimate business fronts) and the Capulets were "a Latin family, sort of,"[15] played by Latin-American and Italian actors.[16] It is set in contemporary United States, where swords are replaced by guns[17] (with model names such as "Dagger", "Sword", and "Rapier"), and with a FedEx-style overnight delivery service called "Post Haste".[18] Shakespeare and Impure Aesthetics explores ideas about art implicit in Shakespeare's plays and defines specific Shakespearean aesthetic practices in his use of desire, death and mourning as resources for art. In fiction, a subplot or side story is a secondary strand of the plot that is a supporting side story for any story or for the main plot. Subplots may connect to main plots, in either time and place or thematic significance. Subplots often involve supporting characters, those besides the protagonist or antagonist. Subplots may also intertwine with the main plot at some point in a story.[1]
THE ENCYCLICAL PASSIONARIES ABOUT YHVH CASAPIANOS (MARTYROLOGY BIBLE)
Specifically, the royal psalms deal with the spiritual role of kings in the worship of Yahweh. Aside from that single qualification, there is nothing else which specifically links the ten psalms. Each of the psalms make explicit references to their subject, the king. Royal (messianic) psalms deal with the king as God's anointed or chosen one. Many are prayers for the wisdom of the king, his long life or success in battle. Some are prophetic in nature in that they also point to the ideal future king, the Messiah or the King of kings. Simple martyrologies only enumerate names. Historical martyrologies, also sometimes called passionaries, also include stories or biographical details. (Reckless Abandonment; Mars Shamanism and Casa Pia Wing Transfer Invocation)
The term "revolutionary martyr" usually relates to those dying in revolutionary struggle.[50][51] During the 20th century, the concept was developed in particular in the culture and propaganda of communist or socialist revolutions, although it was and is also used in relation to nationalist revolutions. In the martyrdom narrative of the remembering community, this refusal to comply with the presented demands results in the punishment or execution of an individual by an oppressor. Accordingly, the status of the 'martyr' can be considered a posthumous title as a reward for those who are considered worthy of the concept of martyrdom by the living, regardless of any attempts by the deceased to control how they will be remembered in advance.[1] Insofar, the martyr is a relational figure of a society's boundary work that is produced by collective memory.[2] Originally applied only to those who suffered for their religious beliefs, the term has come to be used in connection with people killed for a political cause. (Armed Friars and The War for Central Africa between Casapianos and The French; The Fall of Yoruba for Bembé; Arcubusier Angels in Africa)
The Metal Ages is a term for the period of human civilization beginning about 6,000 years ago during which metallurgy rapidly advanced, and human populations started using metals such as copper, tin, bronze and finally iron to make tools and weapons. By heating and shaping metals in hot furnaces, humanity also learned to use precious metals such as gold and silver to make intricate ornaments.[1][2] With these technological adaptions, human society became more productive and human settlements became larger and more prosperous, but also more violent.[3] The Metal Ages are divided into three stages: the Copper Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age.[1][2] (Calcium Age of Mozambique)
Religious practices in ancient Greece encompassed a collection of beliefs, rituals, and mythology, in the form of both popular public religion and cult practices. The application of the modern concept of "religion" to ancient cultures has been questioned as anachronistic.[1] The ancient Greeks did not have a word for 'religion' in the modern sense. Likewise, no Greek writer known to us classifies either the gods or the cult practices into separate 'religions'.[2] Instead, for example, Herodotus speaks of the Hellenes as having "common shrines of the gods and sacrifices, and the same kinds of customs."[3] Various religious festivals were held in ancient Greece. Many were specific only to a particular deity or city-state. Altogether the year in Athens included some 140 days that were religious festivals of some sort, though they varied greatly in importance. (Festival Martyrology)
Gnostic cosmogony generally presents a distinction between a supreme, hidden God and a malevolent lesser divinity (sometimes associated with the biblical deity Yahweh)[1] who is responsible for creating the material universe. Consequently, Gnostics considered material existence flawed or evil, and held the principal element of salvation to be direct knowledge of the hidden divinity, attained via mystical or esoteric insight. Many Gnostic texts deal not in concepts of sin and repentance, but with illusion and enlightenment.[2] Gnostic writings flourished among certain Christian groups in the Mediterranean world around the second century, when the Fathers of the early Church denounced them as heresy.[3]
The original sense of apotheosis relates to religion and is the subject of many works of art. Figuratively "apotheosis" may be used in almost any context for "the deification, glorification, or exaltation of a principle, practice, etc.", so normally attached to an abstraction of some sort.[1] In religion, apotheosis was a feature of many religions in the ancient world, and some that are active today. It requires a belief that there is a possibility of newly-created gods, so a polytheistic belief system. The major modern religions of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism do not allow for this, though many recognise minor sacred categories such as saints (created by a process called canonization). A mural crown (Latin: corona muralis) is a crown or headpiece representing city walls, towers, or fortresses. In classical antiquity, it was an emblem of tutelary deities who watched over a city, and among the Romans a military decoration. Later the mural crown developed into a symbol of European heraldry, mostly for cities and towns, and in the 19th and 20th centuries was used in some republican heraldry. (Mural Crown Wing Transfer)
In religious studies, an ethnic religion is a religion or belief associated with notions of heredity and a particular ethnic group. (CHAMA ROXA)
An illusion is a distortion of the senses, which can reveal how the mind normally organizes and interprets sensory stimulation. Although illusions distort the human perception of reality, they are generally shared by most people.[1] (Sensory Process Sensitivity)
Capricornus is one of the 88 modern constellations, and was also one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Claudius Ptolemy. Its old astronomical symbol is  (♑︎). Under its modern boundaries it is bordered by Aquila, Sagittarius, Microscopium, Piscis Austrinus, and Aquarius. The constellation is located in an area of sky called the Sea or the Water, consisting of many water-related constellations such as Aquarius, Pisces and Eridanus. It is the smallest constellation in the zodiac. (Men)
Leo Minor is a small and faint constellation in the northern celestial hemisphere. Its name is Latin for "the smaller lion", in contrast to Leo, the larger lion. It lies between the larger and more recognizable Ursa Major to the north and Leo to the south. Leo Minor was not regarded as a separate constellation by classical astronomers; it was designated by Johannes Hevelius in 1687.[2] (Women)
Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s.[4][5] Initially, dancehall was a more sparse version of reggae than the roots style, which had dominated much of the 1970s.[6][7] In the mid-1980s, digital instrumentation became more prevalent, changing the sound considerably, with digital dancehall (or "ragga") becoming increasingly characterized by faster rhythms. Key elements of dancehall music include its extensive use of Jamaican Patois rather than Jamaican standard English and a focus on the track instrumentals (or "riddims"). Dancehall saw initial mainstream success in Jamaica in the 1980s, and by the 1990s, it became increasingly popular in Jamaican diaspora communities. In the 2000s, dancehall experienced worldwide mainstream success, and by the 2010s, it began to heavily influence the work of established Western artists and producers, which has helped to further bring the genre into the Western music mainstream.[8][9][10] (DOS SANTOS was this first generation of Dancehall Consumers)

A congress is a formal meeting of the representatives of different countries, constituent states, organizations, trade unions, political parties, or other groups.[1] The term originated in Late Middle English to denote an encounter (meeting of adversaries) during battle, from the Latin congressus.
A federation (also called a federal state) is an entity characterized by a union of partially self-governing provinces, states, or other regions under a federal government (federalism). In a federation, the self-governing status of the component states, as well as the division of power between them and the central government, is constitutionally entrenched and may not be altered by a unilateral decision, neither by the component states nor the federal political body without constitutional amendment.
The League of Corinth, also referred to as the Hellenic League (Greek: κοινὸν τῶν Ἑλλήνων, koinòn tõn Hellḗnōn;[a] or simply οἱ Ἕλληνες, the Héllēnes),[3] was a federation of Greek states created by Philip II[4] in 338–337 BC. The League was created in order to unify Greek military forces under Macedonian leadership (hegemony) in their combined conquest of the Persian Achaemenid Empire.[5][6][7]
The League was governed by the Hegemon (leader)[21][22][23] (strategos autokrator[24][25] in a military context),[26] the council (Synedrion),[27] and the judges (Dikastai). Delegates of the member-states (Synedroi) were responsible for administering the common affairs of the League. They were summoned and presided over by a committee of presiding officers (Proedroi), chosen by lot in time of peace, and by the Hegemon in time of war.[19] Decrees of the league were issued in Corinth, Athens, Delphi, Olympia and Pydna.[28] The League maintained an army levied from member states in approximate proportion to their size, while Philip established Hellenic garrisons (commanded by phrourarchs, or garrison commanders) in Corinth, Thebes, Pydna[29] and Ambracia.

The players and teams that participated in this WWC should all feel extremely proud for the history they have made. Their performances continue to show the world that these athletes are capable of so much more than they are ever fully recognized for.

The player with the record for most world cup appearances in history remains Brazil’s Formiga, the only player to compete in 7 world cups (men or women).
Kristine Lilly still holds the record for most WC appearances by men or women with 30 games played - a record set and held since 2007. Followed by Formiga with 27 as of 2019 and Lionel Messi with 26 as of 2022. The fastest goal in a FIFA Women’s World Cup has stood for over 30 years - it remains the goal scored by Lena Videkull of Sweden, who scored after just 30 seconds against Japan in the inaugural 1991 tournament. Zambia’s Barbra Banda scores the 1000th goal in WWC history. Nouhaila Benzina of Morocco becomes the first Women’s World Cup player to wear a hijab.

The 2023 competition was hosted by Australia and New Zealand, making it the first edition to be held in the Southern Hemisphere, the first Women's World Cup to be hosted by two countries, and the first FIFA senior competition for either men or women to be held across two confederations (Asia and Oceanic).
First edition of the women’s tournament to feature an expansion to 32 teams and 64 matches, and largest women’s sporting event in history with 32 teams and 736 players. Only team to play all matches (group stage + knockout) undefeated with a 6-0-0 record - England All 4 previous winner nations (US, Germany, Norway, and Japan) were eliminated before the semifinal stage, marking the first time this has happened in the competition’s history.
For the first time in its 32 year and 9 tournament history, the WWC has a new champion (Spain) and new runner up (England) in 2023, with both nations never having made it to the final stage before. Only the 2nd nation in history to win both a men’s and women’s World Cup - Spain Top scoring country at the 2023 WWC - Spain with 18 goals First time a senior English football team has made it to a WC final in 6 decades - England WNT
First time advancing past quarterfinals in their WWC history and first host nation to advance to semifinals in 20 years - Australia placed 4th place for best in all 8 WWC competitions they’ve participated in and broke attendance records through all stages of the tournament, with an overall stadium attendance across all matches at 1.978 million. More than 1.5 million tickets were sold for the WWC, surpassing the entire tournament’s projected target in the first 5 days alone.
Two attendance records were broken for both host nations on day one of the WWC - largest crowd ever for a men’s or women’s football game in New Zealand (42,137) and largest crowd ever for a women’s football game in Australia (75,784).
Brazil's opening match v Panama was simulcast live on TV Globo and SporTV, delivering a combined audience of 13.9 million viewers - higher than any audience in the territory during the 2007, 2011, and 2015 WWC. China v England produced the highest audience for a single match, reaching 53.9 million viewers, becoming the highest in any global market so far. 17.15 million people tuned into the Australia v England semifinal cumulatively across Channel 7, Optus Sport, venues, and live-sites, comprising approx 64% of the entire Australian population - the biggest television event not just in any sport in the country, but in Australia’s television history.
The record for highest single match attendance still remains the 1999 WWC final between the US and China with 90,185 in attendance - a number that hasn’t been reached since the men’s tournament at the 1994 WC final between Italy and Brazil at 94,194.
The largest 2023 attendances were at Stadium Australia in Sydney, which saw four capacity-crowd fixtures, including Australia's opening win over Republic of Ireland and the final between Spain and England. The crowd of 75,784 was a record home audience for a women's football match in Australia and the third largest individual crowd attendance in Women's World Cup history. Over 50% of all matches had near sell out or at stadium capacity with a total of 1,977,824 fans in attendance at the 64 games in total, setting a new record for highest overall attendance in Women’s World Cup history across all 9 editions of the tournament. Highest grossing Women’s World Cup in history with a revenue of over half a billion dollars ($570 million), surpassing the projected revenue estimate by $100 million.

Ana Tijoux
Tumblr media

My Alternative 96th Academy Awards
This is an exercise that has not appeared on this blog since 2019 for the 91st ceremony. But I wanted to revive it. So what would tomorrow's Academy Awards ceremony looked like if I determined all the nominees and the winners? This is my ideal world, my alternative universe, if you will. Prepare for controversy, and my ambivalence towards Poor Things and The Zone of Interest (which doesn't get nominated at all here).
It's been a while since I've done this, so there might be some quirks newer followers are less familiar with. Most notably, if you see a three letter abbreviation anywhere, that indicates a movie not in the English language and indicates the country/countries of origin based on their three-letter FIFA code of all things.
Without further ado!
96th Academy Awards – March 10, 2024 Dolby Theatre – Hollywood, Los Angeles, California Host: Jimmy Kimmel Broadcaster: ABC
Best Picture: KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON
Anatomy of a Fall (FRA), Marie-Ange Luciani and David Thion (Neon/Le Pacte)
Barbie, David Heyman, Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley,  and Robbie Brenner (Warner Bros.)
The Holdovers, Mark Johnson (Focus/Universal)
Killers of the Flower Moon, Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas, Martin Scorsese, and Daniel Lupi (Apple/Paramount)
Oppenheimer, Emma Thomas, Charles Roven, and Christopher Nolan (Universal)
Past Lives, David Hinojosa, Christina Vachon, and Pamela Koffler (A24)
Robot Dreams (ESP/FRA), Ibon Cormenzana, Ignasi Estapé, Sandra Tapia, Jérôme Vidal, and Pablo Berger (Neon/Bteam Pictures/Wild Bunch)
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg (Sony Pictures Animation/Columbia)
The Taste of Things (FRA), Olivier Delbosc (Gaumont)
20 Days in Mariupol (UKR), Raney Aronson-Rath, Mstyslav Chernov, Derl McCrudden, and Michelle Mizner (Associated Press/Public Broadcasting Service)
Am I nuts? A documentary (there's nothing in the rules that say they can't be nominated for Best Picture)? Why not? TWO animated features? Let alone a movie that almost nobody outside of Europe has seen? Well I've seen Robot Dreams, and it is one of the best 2023 release I saw all year.
My full thoughts on my favored film, Killers of the Flower Moon, can be found in my write-up here.
Six of the current Best Picture nominees keep their nomination. American Fiction, Maestro, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest are dropped. In their place go Robot Dreams, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Taste of Things, and 20 Days in Mariupol. I strongly considered replacing Barbie, but decided against it. Yes, I believe there were more than ten movies better than Barbie this year. But I richly *enjoyed* Barbie, and appreciate its instant spot in film history. It stays in.
Best Director
Joaquin Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer
Martin Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon
Trần Anh Hùng, The Taste of Things
Justine Triet, Anatomy of a Fall
Folks are saying Martin Scorsese is not nearly as innovative as he used to be. Au contraire, I say. Killers of the Flower Moon exemplifies tons of personal and artistic growth for him... and that extremely risky ending pays off dividends. As a Nolan skeptic, I am indeed impressed with his work on Oppenheimer, but it's not the "best" for me this year.
Those familiar with my affiliation with Viet Film Fest might detect some bias, but hell The Taste of Things was gorgeous, folks.
Best Actor
Bradley Cooper, Maestro
Colman Domingo, Rustin
Paul Giamatti, The Holdovers
Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer
Jeffrey Wright, American Fiction
It's a toss-up to me. But, having to choose one, I'll go for a man who is probably overdue.
Best Actress
Lily Gladstone, Killers of the Flower Moon
Sandra Hüller, Anatomy of a Fall
Alma Pöysti, Fallen Leaves (FIN)
Margot Robbie, Barbie
Emma Stone, Poor Things
The first acting change from the actual Oscars appears here, with Finnish actress Alma Pöysti replacing Annette Bening in Nyad. But this should be Lily Gladstone's, who would justly be making a lot of history here.
And yes, Barbie fans... I relent. Margot Robbie makes my final cut.
Best Supporting Actor
Sterling K. Brown, American Fiction
Robert De Niro, Killers of the Flower Moon
Robert Downey Jr., Oppenheimer
Ryan Gosling, Barbie
Dominic Sessa, The Holdovers
I don't think RDJ should be sweeping the season as he has. I think it's a lot closer between all of these fellows than it actually has been. Disagree with me all you want, but I think De Niro was truly menacing in KOTFM. And he didn't need any deaging this time, either!
Best Supporting Actress
Juliette Binoche, The Taste of Things
Emily Blunt, Oppenheimer
Danielle Brooks, The Color Purple
Penélope Cruz, Ferrari
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, The Holdovers
Fine, I guess? I think Randolph's character gets cut out of The Holdovers far too soon. But I can't make the case for anyone else this year except for maybe Binoche (whom some people will complain about my placement in Supporting Actress instead of Lead Actress, but that's how the studio campaigned for her).
Best Adapted Screenplay
Pablo Berger, Robot Dreams
Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, Barbie
Cord Jefferson, American Fiction
Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer
Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon
I'm not going to second-guess the Academy on its placement of Barbie here. It's not winning in this category in any case. American Fiction is a solid, imperfect satire, and finds its due here.
Best Original Screenplay
İlker Çatak and Johannes Duncker, The Teachers’ Lounge (GER)
David Hemingson, The Holdovers
A.V. Rockwell, A Thousand and One
Celine Song, Past Lives
Justine Triet and Arthur Harari, Anatomy of a Fall
I was very, very tempted to give this to Past Lives. But in the end, my sneaking feeling that I don't quite buy the closeness - despite having not talked for so long - of the two lead characters wins out.
Anatomy of a Fall is a hell of a balancing act, domestically and legally, and wins here.
Best Animated Feature
The Boy and the Heron, Japan (GKIDS/Studio Ghibli/Toho Company)
Ernest & Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia, France (GKIDS/StudioCanal)
Robot Dreams, Spain/France (Neon/Bteam Pictures/Wild Bunch)
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Sony Pictures Animation/Columbia)
Suzume, Japan (GKIDS/Toho Company)
Stoking the flames, but here we are! I think ATSV is slightly better than Robot Dreams as a whole, but the film lacks a resolution and obviously had access to more resources. Spider-Man will return to this category. I'm not so sure about Pablo Berger. The heartfelt and dialogue-free Robot Dreams takes it, while the Ernest & Celestine sequel and Suzume make it in place of Elemental and Nimona.
Best Documentary Feature
Bobi Wine: The People’s President (National Geographic)
The Eternal Memory, Chile (MTV Documentary Films)
Four Daughters, Tunisia/France/Germany/Saudi Arabia (Kino Lorber/Jour2Fête)
To Kill a Tiger, Canada (National Film Board of Canada)
20 Days in Mariupol, Ukraine (Associated Press/Public Broadcasting Service)
Extraordinary filmmaking and, as you can imagine, brutal to watch. It's freely available online for any American readers out there, thanks to PBS.
Best International Feature
Fallen Leaves, Finland
Society of the Snow, Spain
The Taste of Things, France
The Teachers’ Lounge, Germany
20 Days in Mariupol, Ukraine
I follow Academy rules here in terms of one movie per country.
Best Cinematography
Edward Lachman, El Conde
Rodrigo Prieto, Killers of the Flower Moon
Mathtew Libatique, Maestro
Hoyte van Hoytema, Oppenheimer
Jonathan Ricquebourg, The Taste of Things
Best Film Editing
Laurent Sénéchal, Anatomy of a Fall
Kevin Tent, The Holdovers
Thelma Schoonmaker, Killers of the Flower Moon
Jennifer Lame, Oppenheimer
Michael Andrews, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Best Original Score
Michael Giacchino, Society of the Snow
Laura Karpman, American Fiction
Robbie Robertson, Killers of the Flower Moon (posthumous nomination)
John Williams, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Hans Zimmer, The Creator
The folks who complained that Dial of Destiny was not original enough need to go 1) watch the movie and 2) listen to the score afterwards. There was a distinct lack of older Indiana Jones cues in there, and "Helena's Theme" is the best cue of 2023. Too many people online write about film scores but have little idea about what they're talking about (*cough* David Ehrlich at IndieWire *cough*).
That said, Williams doesn't win here. It's Giacchino, for a score that does a hell lot of the heavy emotional lifting in a grim movie that concludes with its real-life happy ending.
Best Original Song
“I’m Just Ken”, music and lyrics by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, Barbie
“It Never Went Away”, music and lyrics by Jon Batiste and Dan Wilson, American Symphony
“Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)”, music and lyrics by Scott George, Killers of the Flower Moon
“What Was I Made For?” music and lyrics by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, Barbie
Four nominees rather than five, because I didn't like much else that was shortlisted. This category has been my personal hell in recent years.
Best Costume Design
Jacqueline Durran, Barbie
Jacqueline West, Killers of the Flower Moon
Janty Yates and Dave Crossman, Napoleon
Ellen Mirojnick, Oppenheimer
Holly Waddington, Poor Things
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Karen Hartley Thomas, Suzi Battersby, and Ashra Kelly-Blue, Golda
Kazu Hiro, Kay Georgiou, and Lori McCoy-Bell, Maestro
Luisa Abel, Oppenheimer
Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier, and Josh Weston, Poor Things
Ana López-Puigcerver, David Martí, and Montse Ribé, Society of the Snow
Best Production Design
Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer, Barbie
Jack Fisk and Adam Willis, Killers of the Flower Moon
Arthur Max and Elli Griff, Napoleon
Ruth De Jong and Claire Kaufman, Oppenheimer
James Price, Shona Heath, and Zsuzsa Mihalek, Poor Things
Best Sound
Ian Voigt, Erik Aadahl, Ethan Van der Ryn, Tom Ozanich, and Dean Zupancic, The Creator
Steven A. Morrow, Richard King, Jason Ruder, Tom Ozanich, and Dean Zupancic, Maestro
Chris Munro, James H. Mather, Chris Burdon, and Mark Taylor, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
Willie Burton, Richard King, Gary A. Rizzo, and Kevin O'Connell, Oppenheimer
Steven Ghouti, Fabiola Ordoyo, and Laia Picón, Robot Dreams
Best Visual Effects
Jay Cooper, Ian Comley, Andrew Roberts, and Neil Corbould, The Creator
Sanjay Bakshi, Stephen Marshall, Jon Reisch, Junyi Ling, Elemental
Takashi Yamazaki, Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi, and Tatsuji Nojima, Godzilla Minus One
Alex Wuttke, Simone Coco, Jeff Sutherland, and Neil Corbould, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
Michael Lasker, Alan Hawkins, Bret St. Clair, Pav Grochola, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Best Animated Short
Letter to a Pig, Israel/France (The Hive Studio/Miyu Productions)
Ninety-Five Senses (MAST/V42 Venture Studio Fund)
Our Uniform, Iran
Pachyderme, France (Miyu Distribution)

Full write-up on this category by yours truly here. Please don't let The ABCs of Book Banning win, I s2g.
Best Live Action Short

Invincible, Canada (H264 Distribution)
Knight of Fortune, Denmark (TV 2)
Red, White and Blue (Majic Ink Productions)

Referee Stéphanie Frappart Will Lead First All-Woman Team at World Cup
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some 92 years after the first World Cup game was held in Uruguay, Stéphanie Frappart is set to become the first woman to be the lead referee during a men’s match at the tournament. Frappart, a French referee, has been appointed to a refereeing crew of all women during a decisive group stage game between Costa Rica and Germany on Thursday.
Frappart, 38, will lead alongside Neuza Back of Brazil and Mexico’s Karen Diaz Medina. It is a barrier-breaking moment which both coaches welcomed and suggested was overdue.
“I trust her 100 percent,” Germany’s manager, Hansi Flick, said of Frappart’s appointment. “I think she deserves to be here due to her performance and achievements.” Costa Rica’s manager, Luis Fernando Suárez, said the same during his prematch news conference.
“I am a great admirer of everything women have conquered,” he said. “And I like that they want to keep conquering things. And this is another step forward, especially in this sport, which is a very macho.”
Frappart told French reporters she considered her selection as lead referee “a surprise.” Still, she has had a stellar career for nearly two decades. A native of Le Plessis-Bouchard, a remote town in the far north of the Paris region, she officiated her first game in 2003 at age 19 — a women’s match between the Henin-Beaumont F.C. and La Roche-sur-Yon. Within two decades, she was overseeing a Women’s World Cup final.
Since then, she climbed the ladder like no woman before her, racking up accolades. In 2014, she became the first woman to be lead referee during a men’s Ligue 2 game, in France’s second division. She then refereed games in men’s Ligue 1, during international friendlies and in the Champions League.
On Aug. 14, 2019, Frappart also became the first woman to referee the UEFA Super Cup between Chelsea and Liverpool. After the game, Jürgen Klopp, the Liverpool coach, praised her performance.
“If we would have played like they whistled, then we would have won, 6-0,” he said.
Frappart’s also refereed the Women’s World Cup final in 2019, when the United States beat the Netherlands to cap a tournament that was a major public forum for the U.S. team’s fight for equal pay and treatment from its national federation.
Pierluigi Collina, the chairman of the FIFA referee committee who is known for being tough on colleagues, has high praise for Frappart. “I hope that there will be more Frapparts in the future and that this will no longer constitute an oddity or news story,” Collina told the Italian press in 2021. At the Globe Soccer Awards in 2019, Frappart won an award as best referee and Collina handed her the trophy.
Frappart told French reporters that she was “aware” that her presence in the tournament is “going to inspire.” But she would prefer to let her whistle do the talking.
“I don’t want to be judged differently because of my gender but because of my refereeing skills,” she said.
In Qatar, Stephanie Frappart has already officiated as fourth referee for two matches during the group phase, when Mexico faced Poland and Portugal played Ghana.

Ok... but not the most accurate argument I've seen regarding this...

Ok starts out well and factual...

Again, all quite true... Then the legal changes occurred...

Tumblr media
View on Twitter
And when these legal changes were made which companies were ordered to end them specifically? Well...
Agencies targeted by the ruling include the country’s top three: JYP Entertainment, SM Entertainment, and YG Entertainment. Smaller firms, LOEN, FNC, Cube, Jellyfish Entertainments and DSP Media were also included. - Source
So no BigHit (now HYBE) mmm, interesting...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok let's be clear here, there are two types of contracts... Idol Trainnee Contracts and Idol Contracts. A trainnee contract can be up to 5 years and Idol one up to 7. BTS's first started on 13th June 2013 and ended on 12th June 2020 (7 years). We know this because they stated this during the BangBangCon Live concert.
So, 2018 was not their contract end, it was when BigHit initiated contract renegotiations.
Also, technically 2017 was when they started to take off (DNA and Billboard Awards noms anyone?).
Tumblr media
There is no basis in fact, just assumption here...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again no basis in facts...
Firstly, the fact that BTS didn't have any money was probably because not 2-3 years earlier BH was on for verge of not continuing with the BTS project until I The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1 was released and they started to make some money. Also remember, for most of 2016/2017 they were on tour or promoting. So when were they gonna spend there money?
Also, after Wings Tour there was bit of down time for them during the renegotiations, which by the BIgHit insisted they involve the Parents and outside legal counsel if the wished to do so.
I think the initial contract stipulated that all should live together in a dorm provide by BH. I have theorised that post contract re-sign they were all allowed to purchase their own property and live there. We know Jin was living somewhere else in 2018, as was Tae & Yoongi in 2019, and by the 2020 nearly all were living away from the dorm.
Also, J Hope's purchase was for his parents. How do this? Well Leetuk has mentioned on several occasions bumping in them at his home in Trimage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I swear some people...
Anyway, we know that a solo era has always been in the works and was meant to happen from 2021, but covid and all that jazz.
Additionally, this solo era would have been negotiated as part of their new contract (which according to some was set to end in 2024) AND that BH would be manging said solo era. We know this because the boys mention this and so have HYBE themselves.
In order for any member to sign deals they would have to notify their management company... why? Because THEY ARE UNDER CONTRACT with NH, and said management company would likely need to be INVOLVED IN THOSE CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS, with other brands, because they manage artist schedules, security and styling, so it doesn't conflict with HYBE/BH plans/policy and BTS concept; as well as it not conflicting with anything in their contract with BTS. People who don't get this are idiots and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near social media.
Agencies are designed to represent their Artists, some fans may not like that but that is an actual fact and BigHit is continuing to represent BTS in their solo era, including with brand deals, features and variety show work.
We don't know the ins and outs of what was agreed regarding Tae and JK's solo work, But JK's FIFA song, got tweeted about and behind the scenes work by BH. Tae's work with Jinny's kitchen has had some promos, and but the Sim Invest deal might and lack of announcement might have something to do with BTS's contract with Tokopedia, and e-commerce company in the same country.
We don't know, so stop suggesting something based on vagueness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OMFG... Go watch this video and fucking enlighten yourselves with some facts from Korean entertainment lawyers...
youtube
They explain that...
... K-Pop companies rarely use slave contracts now, and that a company would make some headlines if they decided to go back to using it....
.... while companies can request to get paid training fees by their trainees, it’s not common. They even explain how people should shy away from a company if they ask for training fees...
Also, if BH/HYBE were being so fucking cruel to deny them opportunities (which we have no real evidence fore) or support, do you seriously think that Tae and JK who were involved in disbandment talks in 2018 wouldn't just straight up and fucking sue HYBE to be released early from their contract?
Why fucking waits another year, when supposedly they ain't getting any work, which could damage their brand?
I swear some people have not fucking clue how the real-world works. BTS and their members currently are the single most important asset for BH and HYBE and have built that company from the ground up. Do you seriously think so fucking little of Tae and JK that they would allow themselves to be used in such manner? Well obviously, yes in this case, otherwise we'd be seeing potential legal proceedings against BH by them.
I bet by 2024/2025 rolls around the we'll get an announcement of them formerly re-signing with HYBE for another 7 years.
Some people need to grow the fuck up.

Rapinoe.
Come tua madre Denise Rapinoe siamo qui a dirti: sei stata grande.

Lionel Messi
Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccittini (Rosario, Argentina, June 24, 1987), known as Leo Messi, is an Argentine soccer player who plays as a striker. Historical player of the Fútbol Club Barcelona, he is currently a free agent after ending his contract with Paris Saint-Germain of Ligue 1 in France. He is also an international with the Argentina team, a team of which he is captain.
Often considered the best player in the world and one of the best of all time,[9] he is the only footballer in history to have won, among other distinctions, seven Ballon d'Or awards, seven FIFA awards for best player of the world, six Golden Boots and two Golden Balls of the Soccer World Cup. In 2020, he became the first soccer player and the first Argentine to receive a Laureus award and was included in the Ballon d'Or Dream Team.
With Barcelona he has won 35 titles, including ten in La Liga, four in the UEFA Champions League and seven in the Copa del Rey.
A prolific scorer, he holds, among others, the records for the most goals in a season, [10] in the same club and in a calendar year. He is also the all-time top scorer for Barcelona and the Argentine team, in La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup, the European Super Cup and the non-European player with the most goals in the UEFA Champions League.
Born and raised in the city of Rosario, at the age of 13 he settled in Spain, where Barcelona agreed to pay for treatment of the hormonal disease he had been diagnosed with as a child. After rapid progression through the Barcelona Youth Academy, he made his official first-team debut in October 2004, aged seventeen. Despite being injury prone early in his career, as early as 2006 he established himself as a pivotal player for the club. His first uninterrupted campaign was the 2008-09 season, in which Barcelona reached the first treble in Spanish football. Due to his style of playing as a small left-handed dribbler, [11] he was soon compared to compatriot Diego Maradona who, in 2007, declared him his "successor".
In 2009, at the age of twenty-two, he won his first Ballon d'Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year award. Three successful seasons followed, in which he won an unprecedented four Ballon d'Ors in a row. His personal best campaign so far is the 2011-12 season, in which he set the record for most goals in a season, both in La Liga and in other European competitions. Over the next two seasons, he too suffered injuries and, in 2014, lost the Ballon d'Or to Cristiano Ronaldo, whom he considers his rival. He returned to his best form during the 2014-15 campaign, in which he surpassed the records for absolute top scorer in La Liga and the Champions League and achieved a historic second treble with Barcelona, as well as winning his fifth Ballon d'Or. winning it for the sixth and seventh time in 2019 and 2021.
As an Argentine international, he has represented his country in fourteen major tournaments. At the youth level, in 2005 he participated with the under-20 team in the South American Cup in Colombia and won the World Cup in the Netherlands, a tournament in which he finished as the best player and top scorer and, with the under-23, received the medal of gold at the 2008 Olympic Games. After making his debut in the senior team in August 2005, at the 2006 World Cup in Germany he became the youngest Argentine to play and score in a World Cup. The following year, in the Copa América, he was named the best young player of the tournament. As captain since August 2011, he reached the finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the 2015 Copa América and the Copa América Centenario with his team, as well as winning the 2021 Copa América against Brazil at the Maracana and, in 2022, the Finalissima against Italy at Wembley and the World Cup in Qatar against France at the Lusail stadium.

Netherlands
FIFA Ranking: 8
Reputation:
The Netherlands won the 2018 Euros and reached the final of the 2019 World Cup, but in 2022 they dropped from 4th place to 8th place in the FIFA world rankings. This is a result of a team who has a solid base, but suffers if its stars are not available. Some of their strongest players aren’t playing at their best any more, and their extremely capable goalie from 2019, Sari Van Veenendaal, has retired, leaving huge shoes to fill. Additionally, the coach that led them to the 2019 World Cup final has since taken a job at England, leaving the team in the hands of less-experienced and very recent addition, Andries Jonker. Their most important game in the group will be the repeat of the 2019 final, Netherlands v. USA, where the Dutch walked away with silver.
Player Pool:
Netherlands’ stars from the 2019 World Cup are in the team’s midfield: Lieke Martens and Danielle Van de Donk. I would normally include Vivianne Miedema, but she was ruled out of the tournament with an ACL injury. The team will need to rely on veterans Sherida Spitse (captain), Shanice van de Sanden, and Jill Roord to pull them past the group stage.
2019 WWC Performance:
The Netherlands skyrocketed into the final this year, winning their group and finding results in every game in the elimination round, except for the USA. Their game against Sweden went to extra time, but they showed the grit and talent to make it to the final.  They had an impressive number of goalscorers, with the top being Vivianne Miedema, and the goalie Sari Van Veenendaal won the tournament’s Golden Glove award, and is my Netherlands MVP.
Portugal
FIFA Ranking: 21
Reputation:
It will surprise most people that Portugal is also a World Cup debutante–they are the highest FIFA-ranked debutante team– their inclusion this year is due to one of the extra European confederation spots in the expanded field. Despite never having qualified, Portugal has been a staple in the women’s game for years as they host the Algarve Cup, a yearly international invitational tournament that is considered a “Mini World Cup” that has run since 1994– making it the second longest running women's soccer tournament, other than the World Cup itself. Portugal will likely beat fellow debutante Vietnam in their group, but will likely not find results in games against the USA and the Netherlands, the gold- and silver-medalists of the 2019 World Cup.
Player Pool:
Portugal has several veteran players with over 100 caps, but there isn’t a front-runner that has scored massive amounts of goals for the country. FIFA pinpoints Dolores Silva as the player to watch, a dynamic midfield veteran that scored a couple goals in their path to qualify for 2023.
2019 WWC performance:
Did not qualify
Vietnam
FIFA Ranking: 33
Reputation:
After narrowly missing out on both the 2015 and 2019 World Cup, Vietnam finally qualified for 2023, and followed up their qualification by winning the 2023 Southeast Asia Playoffs, in which fellow debutante the Philippines didn’t make it out of their group. To help the growth of women's soccer in their country, there is a semi-professional league  that almost all of the players are in.  An interesting twist in their qualification is that some of their games were against Asian teams that were still suffering substantial player unavailability due to covid–but Vietnam’s luck ran out when the country got placed in this group with the USA and the Netherlands.
Player Pool:
Since almost all of the team plays domestically, there isn’t a lot known about the team. Captain Huỳnh Như and midfielder Nguyễn Thị Tuyết Dung are the leading scorers.
2019 WWC performance:
Did not qualify

Pryzm residency 2.12.22. Vol 2.
Fog, what fog?!? Flippin cold thou!
Fond memories of the 2019 Mumford shows. Kingston doesn’t seem to have changed too much. Wilco has gone self service checkout, the iconic Red Telephone boxes are still around the corner from the venue, the car parking is still over priced, The Wetherspoons was still there and as busy as ever. (£7.95 meal deals) with Lunch in the belly we watched the men put up the set of Christmas trees. 4 understated flat trees with lights. 5/10.
Whilst queuing just the one car prang incident, and funny community police officer support lady moment. I think she thought we were all homeless! Once we established we were waiting for doors, her parting comment in a very sweet Irish accent “you enjoy your rock and roll” funny.
Pryzm, very organised doors, Through the airport security scanner and up those two flights of marble stairs. It felt smaller inside than the previous visit.
We did have a gate crasher, spotted pre show a small moving animal with a tail, let’s call it the house mouse. It was bold as well as strong and according to all reports A massive Mumford fan.
Excellent banter from the start. All three shows award winning chat. I’m going to keep the banter general as the brain is foggy as to which show!!
Highlights:
Oceania - being 16 and scoping the place from the balcony. Minesweeping the place. Wearing moccasin. Fond memories.
19 shows back to back. Having a great hardworking crew. First day off for them in 2 1/2 weeks today. All 6 of them now existing like an #elitesurvivalsquad. Only surviving on Freddos, (underrated chocolate) fifa, and tea. The longest sober stag party! Still feeling like being on his holibobs. End of term bash!
A homecoming residency. Around America for 12 weeks only touching the surface, and ending up in Kingston! Anti residency strategy.
Set two: imagine Only Child sung beautifully, with added bar staff glass chinking’ “that’s the glass recycling done for the evening” efficient use of time! His father does the recycling at home and sometimes doesn’t get it quite right, as highlighted by his wife!! They moved in during the pandemic, hence why he lives in LA!
No one was to mention the football score as they had paused the game. He would get very moody if they did.
Turns out later in the evening Germany were out the World Cup. He was delighted! Who is German in here tonight!!! Gives them the V’s laughs and night made! German karma later as the guitar was tuned badly making for an awkward tuning session.
The Cave. Played so “quietly” that he broke his first string on this tour!!! Happy days! Another win.
Two joyful crowd pleasing outings of Reincarnation, his favourite song, the family album for children was only just around the corner.
Many uses of the C*nt word. But being a good c*nt.
Three great sets containing
Only child x 3
Dangerous game x 3
Go in light x 3
The cave x 2
Awake my soul x 2
Better off high x3
Cowboy x 2
Re-incarnation x2
Grace x 2
How x 2
I will wait x 3
I’m on fire - finale only.
The crowd super respectful throughout and you could hear a pin drop.
And then it was over….. a bit of a testing drive home, I’d like to thank the large guiding light freight lorry for 10 miles of heavy fog. And the two deers that opted to eat grass vs run out across the new forest and meet their maker.

Hearts and Minds of Sport, Broken and Infected
Arguably the best ever football player in history, signing for Al Nassr. A momentous day for Saudi Arabia, with elegance and history gracing the Saudi Pro League. A king crowned, a scoring sovereign, a cultured prince turned sultan bringing millions of fans to spectate the Knight of Najd. What did it take? A murdered journalist?
Boxing brilliance, an underdog story and a thrilling rematch in the works. Fans worldwide anticipating the much-wanted sequel; will it happen in the UK, the famous York Hall, or Madison Square Gardens, two boxing venues cloaked in long standing chronicles. Or maybe the very ‘historic’ Diriyah Arena in Saudi Arabia, constructed in 2019 to host the rematch. What did it take? $6 billion spent on sports deals?
18th December 2022; the World Cup final, two Nations ingrained with success, battling to lift the most prestigious international competition in history. One side hoping to repeat a previous triumph; another led by one of the most decorated players in football, aspiring to discover the missing trophy in his cabinet, a hidden treasure buried in the sand. The potential to be the most-watched game ever. What did it take? A corruption scandal deep within FIFA and rigged awarding of hosting the World Cups?
Three major events that won the hearts of fans worldwide, and that is how soft power really catches you.
The Evolution of Soft Power - Deception in motion
Did you ever question the reasoning of Russia and Qatar being awarded the World Cups in 2018 and 2022? Or Saudi Arabia in 2034; another tournament that will pause seasons across the globe to accommodate the harsh and scorching weather in the Middle East? As football fans, we must accept these conditions to roister the beautiful game. Nonetheless, it’s not just football that decisions are made against the will of athletes and the fans. The 2022 Winter Olympics hosted by China, a nation with a horrible human rights record, hosting a worldwide mega event. Qatar hosting the 2022 World Cup will undoubtedly move eyes away from the 6500 migrant workers who died since the Middle Eastern nation were ‘awarded’ the competition. As Sohail Mamood declared, ‘Qatar’s Soft Power won the World Cup’. Expert Rothna Begum, the Senior Women's Rights Researcher at the Human Rights Watch, states 'look at the way in which the Kalafa system exists, it creates all sorts of abuses.' She further went on to say that 'from the very beginning, when migrant workers are recruited into the country, they are not supposed to be paying fees, but the vast majority of migrant workers were paying thousands of dollars to be able to come to Qatar for a job'.
youtube
Let's delve deeper into the issue. What exactly is ‘Soft Power’? The term was coined and popularised by Joseph Nye in the late 1980s, and went on to define the post-Cold War era. Nye explains ‘Soft Power’ as the ability to shape the preferences for others, with countries resting primarily on three resources; its culture, its political values and its foreign policies. Whilst in contrast to hard power, a technique that would usually involve strategies including strong military force and economic sanctions, soft power appears a lot more positive. Soft power wants to use persuasion to achieve foreign policy objectives and communicate compelling narratives.
Despite the term only appearing in the last half century, Soft Power has been prevalent since before the Second World War. The 1936 Berlin Olympics was hosted by Nazi Germany, and it became a powerful propaganda tool for Nazi Germany as it tried to make its brutal treatment of Jews, political opponents and others seem benign. Hitler organised for six gymnasiums and other small arenas to be built, alongside a 100,000 seater track and field stadium, historically known as the ‘Olympistadion’; which recently hosted the 2024 Euros final between Spain and England. The 1936 Olympics was marred with Nazi imagery, with swastikas hung on buildings and Nazi salutes during medal ceremonies. As Andrew Nagorski wrote about in his book ‘Hitlerland’, the ‘Fuhrer uch Reichskanzler’ saw the 1936 Olympic games as an opportunity to promote his government and ideals of racial supremacy and anti-semitism. Germany topped the medal charts with a whopping 38 golds and 101 total medals, indicating how soft power and a sprinkle of corruption can make spectators believe how good you are perceived to be.
Just two years before the Berlin games, a similar event of Soft Power took place in Italy, as Mussolini’s Italy hosted the second ever World Cup. The 1930s was a decade of fascism in Europe, and Mussolini fired a huge propaganda campaign with the promotion of football as a patriotic symbol of their superiority. In addition to the fascist ideology communicated by Italy during the World Cup, Mussolini really wanted to flex Italy’s muscles as a powerful country by winning the final. Other big nations taking part boosted popularity, but a predictable Italy ‘win’ uplifted their reputation; despite certain rumours of corruption favouring the host nation, including on-field fights and illegible players…
So, soft power has been utilised for a long time. Over the course of around 100 years, you could imagine us as sports fans would catch on to the idea of soft power, and eliminate the operators. Has 21st century elite sports learnt anything about the dynamics of soft power?
The awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar blew up in the faces of FIFA as backlash was rife; especially in the media. FairSquare issued a statement to Gianni Infantino, informing him to take a ‘proactive’ stance on migrant workers’ rights in Qatar. If you try and search about the Qatar World Cup, the search results lead to many top publications criticising the hosting of the World Cup, all the controversies and FIFA. So how did Qatar achieve this event, and how did their soft power win in front of everyone's faces?

Sportswashing - Wipe away the Corruption
After watching and enjoying the 2022 World Cup, what is the most memorable moment? That Mbappe final hat-trick, Messi winning his first ever World Cup, or, for us England fans, Harry Kane blasting a penalty over the bar to see us lose to France in the quarter-finals. This is what the Qatar World Cup will be remembered for, not the horrific abusive labour practices and human rights violations. Qatar, a nation with a very little football history, became the first Country to host and qualify for a World Cup without ever playing in one previously. As their team lined up on the 20th November 2022, Ecuador promptly washed them away with two first-half goals to eventually win 2-0. Qatar never wanted to do well at the World Cup. It's not about results on the pitch, it's about their reputation.
The original use of ‘sportswashing’ and who coined it has been hard to pin, yet it has been snowballing in popularity in the last two decades. Sportswashing - the act of aligning with with an athlete, sports team, or event in order to distract from unethical practises elsewhere - was first thought to be associated with Beijing hosting the 2008 Olympics, with China hoping to distract from their human right’s violations.
For the gulf nation, the rush to host a World Cup was to establish an image as a global powerhouse, and to fulfil the ideology of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-thani, the emir of Qatar, by economically developing the country. However, the movement of money crashed against a wall of controversy. Being the smallest ever country to host a World Cup, Qatar had to invest heavily to ensure everyone would remember Qatar  as the Country who organised an amazing event, made even better by the exciting footballing moments. Forbes estimates Qatar splashed well over $200 billion on the World Cup, from new elite hotels, airport renovation, upgrades to public transport all over the country and eight new, grand spanking stadiums to watch corrupted football. Qatar’s reputation certainly skyrocketed with the World Cup, but for the wrong reasons. During the building of this luxury infrastructure, the Guardian reported that workers were forced into labour, a form of modern slavery. Workers were being forced to live in unsanitary and overcrowded accommodation, with some workers alleging they were not being paid and not allowed to return back home. The Supreme Committee, the organising body associated with the World Cup, announced they were ‘deeply concerned’ with the allegations, and an investigation was being conducted. However, we all know it was their plan in the first place.
The day Lionel Messi lifted the golden World Cup trophy, iconically wearing a black robe, a ‘bischt’ in Qatari culture, over 6500 migrant workers had been murdered for that moment. Of the over 1.5 billion spectators that watched the World Cup final between Argentina and France, I wonder how many were questioning the ethical nature of the competition. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-thani handed Messi the bischt, with blood on his hands.
It wasn’t just the years leading up to the tournament, even at the beginning of the 2022 World Cup, there was controversy around the Middle Eastern’s law when it came to homosexuality. The ‘Islamic Sharia Law’ forbids same-sex relations and there were big questions about the safety of the LGBTQ+ community leading into this global event. How are you supposed to host a World Cup and omit an entire minority based on their sexuality? For FIFA, mega events like the World Cup can be seen as opportunities to move forward as a society, especially in regards to the safety given to members of the LGBTQ+ community. Josh Cavallo, an Australia U20 international, came out as gay in October 2021, becoming the first top flight footballer to do so. Cavallo stated he felt ‘excluded’ and ‘disappointed in FIFA’ for letting Qatar host the World Cup.
However, the worst was yet to come on this issue. Following numerous questions about the safety of gay people in Qatar, FIFA president Gianni Infantino came out with a humorous press conference protecting Qatar; in which he said ‘he felt gay’, trying to emulate the emotional feelings of gay people surrounding issues with the World Cup. To top it all off, Infantino said he felt ‘disabled’ and he felt like ‘a migrant worker’.

Despite all of the negativity around the World Cup, it will still be remembered as the tournament when Messi finally won. The minds of the public and fans are thinking about results, and not what happens behind the scenes.
It's not just nations that are sportswashing. Companies are sports washing and it is appearing everywhere, especially in the Premier League. The pinnacle of English football is guilty, and in ways that you may not expect. Most recently, Newcastle United were taken over by a Saudi-led consortium in 2021, with the reigns being taken off Mike Ashley, who left St. James’ Park and took his Sports Direct advertising with him. When former Director of Newcastle, Amanda Stavely, was asked about Saudi Arabia’s human rights concerns, she stated they took the records ‘very seriously’, but reiterated the takeover was not a Saudi state, but a Public Investment Fund.
Human Rights expert Rothna Begum commented that 'It's incredibly concerning the way in which governments of regions that have terrible human rights records are buying up sports teams, and getting involved this way through sportswashing efforts.' She added 'its difficult for that sports team to talk about it (sportswashing), its difficult for those fans to condemn this government, when they are financing their favourite football team'.
The Premier League first denied the takeover due to the Saudi involvement, but in 2021, the Premier League released a statement in which they confirmed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will not control the club. Nevertheless, the Saudi state does not control Newcastle United, but since the takeover, they have been happy to splash the cash on transfers on players like Tonali, Isak and Gordon. This sportswashing act is even more hidden than others. After the years of hurt under Mike Ashley, the ‘Saudi’ private investment fund spent a load of money and hurled Newcastle into the Champions League. I wonder what the opinion of Newcastle fans will be over Saudi Arabia, as they walk away with an improved reputation and another successful sportswashing scheme.
In the hearts and minds of Newcastle fans, they know it's wrong, however, they can’t help but love the success.
Greenwashing - The cost of being environmentally ethical
As sportswashing was on the rise, a different type of washing was always prevalent, but not always in the sporting world. ‘Greenwashing’ is when companies use PR tactics to appear environmentally friendly, without ever doing the hard work to reduce their environmental impact. The term was coined back in 1986 by environmentalist Jay Westerveld and features in sports more than you think. Major climate polluters have been accused of sportswashing, in numerous different sports. Manchester City released a ‘greener’ transport and travel way for fans to get to games in a ‘greener’ way. They included that ‘more bike racks have been added, and a city link walk through for fans. This is the standard for greenwashing, as the Citizens’ main sponsor is Etihad Airways, who release a heinous amount of carbon emissions every year. In 2023, Etihad Airways ‘sustainable aviation’ ads were banned in the UK; as a UK advertising watchdog judged that Etihad mislead consumers over the environmental impacts of flying. These greenwashing attempts are keeping Manchester City’s environmental reputation very positive, whilst their sponsors are indulging in heavy environmental damage every year.
On the other side of Manchester, the Red Devils aren’t squeaky clean on their greenwashing record, as INEOS taking over Manchester United is a huge scheme to cover up the harm that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s company actually does. Fossil Fuel companies worldwide have been revealed to invest over $4 billion in greenwashing acts, to divert attention away from their climate carelessness. INEOS faced backlash in Grangemouth, Scotland, as their biggest facility is responsible for emitting 3.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2019, and it has been argued if their carbon dioxide holding facilities are reliable at keeping in emissions and not releasing them into the atmosphere. In addition, INEOS’ sponsor of Team Sky in cycling has further pushed greenwashing claims as Ratcliffe’s company hides behind sporting organisations to turn eyes away.
Despite both of these, will United or City fans promote backlash against their clubs, or will hearts in elite sports let greenwashing and soft power take over. As a Manchester United fan myself, I feel almost powerless.
Will soft power and sportswashing/greenwashing ever stop? The biggest stakeholders in this current predicament are the fans. The fans have the power; they can protest against their club, protest against FIFA and protest for a better sporting world. The question really is if they will. Manchester City fans off the back of a treble will be as happy as Larry.
From the Premier League to the World Cup, to any sports in between, it seems that soft power and sportswashing is relevant and accelerating to rates that are unstoppable. Any nation or company can now use a sporting team as a shield for backlash and make themselves the light in the darkness for fans, whereas they are the dark in the light for the rest of the world.
